Teeth have many functions. Of course the obvious one is to enable us to chew our food so that it can be swallowed and digested. But our teeth also have a dramatic impact on the way we look and feel about ourselves. And unhealthy teeth can both lead to or warn of other significant health problems.

The bottom line for good oral health is all about how clean your mouth is.  Regular interval check-ups and cleanings allow us to assure you that you are on the right path or to intervene early in the event of problems.  At your check-up, we will evaluate factors such as;

  • Risk for decay
  • Development or progression of gum disease
  • Failure or risk of failure of existing restorations

Most often, people who see their dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings do not require intervention.

Cleanings and Check-ups

During your regular check-up our hygienists will update your medical history and assess the health of your teeth and gums.  They will clean your teeth and scale them for any plaque &/or tartar build-up. Diagnostic x-rays are used as necessary to identify any problem areas of decay. The teeth are polished to remove staining. For children, fluoride treatments are usually advised and done by the hygienist. After your cleaning, your dentist and hygienist will review your status with you and make any necessary recommendations.

In addition and when needed, our hygienists and dentists will;

  • demonstrate effective tooth brushing and flossing
  • provide infant care instruction as well as nutritional information to help in the prevention of dental disease
  • recommend preventive treatment for oral habits such as thumb-sucking
  • recommend space maintainers to allow for optimal eruption of new teeth
  • recommend sealants for virgin teeth in order to help prevent tooth decay
  • provide custom-made athletic mouth guards for active children and adults engaged in athletic pursuits
