A dental implant is an artificial root composed of titanium metal. Dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone in order to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is then attached to the implant. The implant serves as an anchor to secure the replacement tooth in place. Dental implants are a comfortable and excellent restorative option for patients with healthy gums and adequate bone.
The dentist or specialist will first closely examine the patient’s mouth and take X-rays as necessary. During the first phase of the procedure, the dental implant will be placed into the patient’s jawbone, below the gum tissue. The gum tissue will be stitched and will eventually heal over time (usually several months) and fuse with the bone. In the second phase, an abutment will be attached to the implant. Finally, an artificial replacement tooth will be secured onto the abutment.
In most circumstances, we are able to both place and restore dental implants in our facility. In clinical situations where the surgery is more difficult, we will refer patients to a specialist such as a periodontist or oral surgeon to place the implant. Once that has healed, we will complete the procedure with the restoration, i.e. the replacement tooth.
When replacing several teeth or all of your teeth, either a fixed bridge is anchored to your implants or a removable partial or full denture is made to snap into special attachments on the implants.
