Tooth whitening lightens the existing colour of your natural teeth which can become stained over time for many reasons. Maybe you smoke or consume food and drinks that stain your teeth—tea, coffee, red wine, black currant. Sometimes teeth are stained just under the surface because of exposure to certain antibiotics, or small cracks in the surface which allow teeth to take up stains. Tartar (calculus) can also change the colour of teeth.
At Southview Dental in Milton, we offer the most widely used and cost-effective teeth whitening system available to patients—professional bleaching. This straightforward procedure involves specially made trays, which fit like a mouthguard and hold a peroxide gel that allows oxygen to get into the teeth and lighten them.
Professional bleaching involves a number of steps that take between three and four weeks. At your first appointment with Southview Dental, we begin by taking an impression of your teeth to make a custom mouthguard. Once your mouthguard is ready, your dental team will start your treatment, but you will need to continue the treatment at home for 30 minutes to an hour over the next two to four weeks depending on the amount of lightening you want.
Now that you have nice white teeth that make you smile, try to take better care of them. Smoking will continue to stain your teeth and so will tea, coffee, red wine. Using a whitening toothpaste will help improve your chances of keeping a bright white smile.
Talk to your dental team about any ‘false’ teeth surfaces that may interfere with teeth whitening. Only natural teeth can be whitened and does not lighten stained dentures, crowns or veneers.
At Southview Dental, your smile is our number one priority—we work closely together with patients to help them achieve their best smile ever.
